“Perfect” was composed for Sheeran’s sweetheart, Cherry, and the “main tune” he makes reference to is really Future’s “March Madness.”
In a talk with Entertainment Tonight Canada, Ed clarified the motivation behind the words:
The song that we’re listening to is Future’s ‘March Madness,’ which is like, the least romantic song in the world. We were in Ibiza at James Blunt’s house and for some reason, there was a certain point in the night and people just put on house music. I just don’t like house music at all—at all! So I changed it to Future’s “March Madness” and there were a bunch of 40 year old people like, ‘What are you doing? What is this?’ And then we had a dance.
On this song Ed affirms his pledge to his better half Cherry, they agree, and as he has implied on numerous events, in interviews and all through his songs, he is prepared for marriage.
He depends her to be the mother of his youngsters. This is something Ed has needed for quite a while, as he communicated in a talk with Zane Lowe:
